INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON LONG-TERM STUDIES ON BIODIVERSITY

Invitation

The São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP), within the scope of its BIOTA/FAPESP Program:
“The Virtual Institute of Biodiversity”  is grateful to invite you to the

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON LONG-TERM
STUDIES ON BIODIVERSITY

Long term studies are necessary in order to document biodiversity and understand both biological and human processes that determine its pattern of distribution and abundance, as most of these processes have a relatively long time scale. However, biodiversity documentation and monitoring are still generally short-termed. A program on long term studies on biodiversity requires a network of projects on study sites that well represent local biomes and anthropogenic landscapes. The data generated by individual projects should be compatible and comparable, which requires systematized sampling and an open data bank. In addition, intermediate evaluations of individual projects require pre-established criteria and clear milestones. There is already a certain group of well established long term studies with experience enough to guide novel similar initiatives. There are also a large number of graduate programs that could be associated with long term study sites in biodiversity in order to improve knowledge and human resources in environmental and biological sciences.
